KALAMANDALAM SREEDEVI MOHANAN, born on 1962, after school education joined five year Mohiniyattam & Bharathanatyam course at Kerala Kalamandalam under Guru Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, Kalamandalam Padmini and Kalamandalam Leelamma and completed her course in 1982 with ‘Vallathol Federation’ Scholarship and Dr. K. N. Pisharodi Memorial Medal for the Best student.
Then she started teaching dance regularly. In 1984 she joined as a dance teacher in ‘Vijnanakalavedi’ cultural center, Chengannur. At the same time she learned Mohiniyattam and Kuchippudi from ‘Viswadarsana School of Dance’ (Udyogamandal – in Kerala State) which is directed by the famous dancer and choreographer Kalamandalam Chandrika Menon and then achieved higher studies from Kalakshethra Kuchippudi Academy (Andhra Pradesh).
At present she is the Director of ‘Chilanka Dance and Music Academy’ situated in the famous heritage village ‘ARANMULA’, started in 1986 as an institution for Indian classical arts that provides training in any field of South Indian art forms under the guidance of eminent gurus. It is recognized by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy.
She has participated in many Cultural Programmes all over India. She has written and choreographed various VARNAMS, PADAMS, THILLANAS etc in Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattam . Her major choreographic productions in Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kuchippudi are SREESANKARAM, SREEKRISHNA KATHAMRUTHAM, RAMAYANA, NIRVEDAM, SISHYANUM MAKANUM, ASHTALEKSHMI [lighting only with the Nilavilakku (traditional lamps)], MEENAKSHI KALYANAM, NAVABHAKTHI, NAVARAGAMALIKA, KAIRALI VANDANAM, VANDEMATHARAM and Bengali stories for children. She also conducts demonstrations, seminars, higher study classes and debates.
For the contributions made so far in the field of art she was honoured by ‘Kaladarpanam with ‘KALARATHNA AWARD’ (In memory of Kalamandalam Kalyanikuttiyamma), NARTAKI Award, KALABODHINI Award, KALADAMPATHY Award GANDHI SMRITHY Award, SAMSKRITHY SAMSKARIKA VEDI Award etc. She has been the main judge for various competitions including District, State, University level and abroad India.
Her Husband Fact Mohanan is a famous Kathakali performer and Director of ‘Samskrithy’ Center for Indian performing Arts, Chengannur. Daughter, Anjana. S. Mohanan is a classical dance performer, Carnatic vocalist and Guest Lecturer in Bharathanatyam at RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura and son Aravind.S. Mohanan is a Mridangist.
